Die Autorin untersucht von Mitte des 19. bis Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts die Entwicklung der Anwendbarkeit und Anwendung dieser Regeln in bewaffneten Konflikten zwischen europäischen Kolonialmächten und der nicht europäischen Bevölkerung in der Region des heutigen Namibias, Kongos, Kenias und Algeriens. Die Autorin zeigt die Doppelzüngigkeit der Kolonialmächte auf: Die Ausdehnung des Anwendungsbereichs dieser Regeln hatte nur begrenzt praktische Auswirkungen. Die Missachtung humanitärer Mindeststandards in Kolonialkonflikten in Afrika blieb bis Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts weitgehend ungesühnt. Beeinflusst von den europäischen Mächten fehlten u.a. Durchsetzungsmechanismen für Brüche humanitären Rechts. Und dies, obwohl Kolonialmächte bereits im 19. Jahrhundert auf ihren Leumund achteten und als humanitär agierend wahrgenommen werden wollten. / »Reappraisal of Injustices Committed in Colonial Wars« -- The peak of the European colonization of Africa in the nineteenth century coincided with the beginning of the codification of international humanitarian law and national military law.
