| Description: | Education is the determining factor of the success of a society. Whereas printed information dominated learning and teaching for centuries, electronic media increasingly supplements the human knowledge archives, namely the Internet as the most accessible library at all. In this paper, we present the Styrian School Network (STSnet)⎯a project offering the infrastructure for integrating the Internet into the school’s daily routine. The paper discusses the evolution of STSnet from its first stages as a trial network to its current operational stage. The state-of-the-art access technologies employed by STSnet are described. These are mainly public asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) infrastructure used as the backbone network and the integrated services digital network (ISDN) as narrowband access to the ATM backbone. |
