Abstract: Background: Neonatal encephalopathy is seen in 10 to 14 per cent of foals, with ischaemic/ hypoxic and non‐ischaemic events observed. It is important to categorise foals based on type of encephalopathy and severity of clinical signs, as early recognition of cases that can be managed on farm, or that require referral, is key to optimising foal survival. Aim of the article: This article outlines the pathophysiology of neonatal encephalopathy in foals and the treatment and management options available for this condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
